The international tender called for the new museum district in Budapest’s largest park, City Park has closed and we’re glad to present the winners.
The tender was for plans of 5 new museum buildings behind Heroes’ Square and was called jointly by the Museum of Fine Arts and Városliget Zrt. in February. The jury consisted professionals from architecture and museum related organizations who evaluated the works based on 5 criteria: technology and functional concept, the quality and sustainability of the project, public conversation and the expenditures. Some 500 works were handed in anonimously, so that the jury did not know the architect firms behind the design.
The Museum of Ethnography will be built according to the plans of French architects Vallet de Martinis DIID Architectes, the House of Hungarian Music will be designed by the Japanese Sou Fujimoto Architects, while the Hungarian firm Középülettervező Zrt. (public building design company) will supply plans for both PhotoMuseum Budapest and the Museum of Hungarian Architecture.
The new concept behind Museum Quarter will enable cooperation between the museums and not only foster the recognition of Hungarian art and culture among tourists, but also benefit city dwellers by providing exciting and open public spaces for locals as well.
