BUDAPEST SAFARI

A Kenyan-born artist who has been living in Hungary for many years invites you to a „Budapest Safari” at his exhibition. In his paintings, he illustrates the everyday life of the capital with a lot of colours, irony and a whole new perspective.

Marcus Goldson was born in Kenya in 1969 and studied Art History and Sculpture in the UK before coming to Budapest and, although he’s more famous of his paintings, he still regularly creates sculptural pieces that can be used for decoration or as functional pieces for interiors. He’s travelled a lot and has taken his watercolours everywhere. He’s painted in numerous parts of Europe, Africa, Asia and the Middle-East and sometimes spent half the day sitting on the edge of pavements, trying to finish a picture. Besides producing his own works, he has worked as an illustrator for a variety of magazines and is now creating illustrations for Forbes Magazine Hungary.

He moved to Budapest back in 1993 and as a foreign artist, he became interested in depicting the things he found different about the city. In his pictures of Budapest, he concentrates on the details, saying that they are important to the narrative; there are many places that, in general, would look the same, but if details that are specific to that place – such as street signs, people’s clothing or brands of cigarette – are shown, we get a more complete picture.

In a city like Budapest you can witness anything from the plain hilarious to the weird and macabre in a matter of minutes on the same street. Essentially, my Budapest pictures show people being people, dogs being dogs, pensioners behaving badly and everyone generally being themselves. Without exception all these pictures have been inspired by real people in real places.” – says Goldson.

You might be familiar with the streets, bars, the underground stations, bus stops or the typical Chinese restaurants of Budapest but you sure haven’t seen it from a perspective like the painter’s. The artist’s works are displayed in Brody Art Yard, and the exhibition called „Budapest Safari” can be visited until the 14th of February.
