HUNGARIAN IMPRESSIONISM IN VÁRKERT BAZÁR

Várkert Bazár is to host an exhibition of the works of the popular Hungarian impressionist painter, István Csók.

István Csók (1865-1961), one of the greatest masters of Hungarian impressionist painting lived and exhibited in Paris for some time but was most popular in Hungary. He became famous for his portraits, nudes and landscapes, mainly of Lake Balaton. The 150th anniversary of his birth, the memorial year that commemorates his life and work opens with a large-scale exhibition on his birthday, 13 February in the famous Várkert Bazár. This will be the first exhibition organized especially for the recently redeveloped venue. Várkert Bazár was under renovation more times, first from the summer of 2013 till April 2014, it finally reopened in August last year and now awaits visitors as a multifunctional venue.

All together 70 paintings will be on display, in thematic units. Furthermore, many of the painter’s personal belongings will also be exhibited. But the exhibition is only the start; the National Cultural Fund has granted 35 million forints to support the series of events. It includes the painter’s bust being unveiled in his native village, Cece on 14 February and the commemorative coin to be issued by the National Bank at the end of the month. There will also be a chamber exhibition held by King St. Stephen Museum in Székesfehérvár and a travelling exhibition between April 2015 and February 2016.
