Music Museums in Budapest

Are you a musician, or a music-enthusiast? Would you like to visit some Hungarian museums, where you can learn more about Franz Liszt, some interesting instruments or rock music? Then visit Budapest, and don’t miss the following museums.

 

Museum of Music History

If you take a walk in Buda Castle, and you would like to see some interesting details about musical instruments from the 18th till the 20th century in Hungary, then visit the Museum of Music History. There you can see how a master violin or a violin-making workroom looks like, and you can take a look at several music-themed coins and badges, too.

Entrance fee: HUF 300 for students, HUF 600 for adults

Rock Museum

Do you like rock music? If yes, and if you would like to know how Hungarian musicians dressed, or what kind of instruments they had in the Sixties, Seventies and Eighties, then visit Rock Museum. You can take a look at Levente Szörényi’s guitar or the first smoke machine of the well-known band Omega. They usually have interesting periodic exhibitions, for example in December, there was a nice display about some Beatles relics.

Hungarian National Museum

If you would like to see some musical instruments, used by well-known historic figures of Hungary, then don’t miss the music instrument collection of the Hungarian National Museum. Here you can learn more about the production and use of the musical instruments in Hungary, as well. The entrance fees are very reasonable.

Entrance fee: HUF 350 for students, HUF 1100 for adults, valid for all the other exhibitions of the museum, too.

Franz Liszt Memorial Museum and Research Centre

This is a museum, or rather a reconstruction of Liszt's last flat in Budapest on the first floor of the old Academy of Music. The composer lived here between 1881 and 1886. The collection of the museum contains his original instruments, furniture, his books, scores and some personal objects and memorabilia. The Liszt Research Centre in the house coordinates Liszt-research in Hungary. In the museum, they can arrange guided tours for pre-announced groups in several languages. Audio guides are available in 11 languages.
