Budapest is a must-see – according to The New York Times
Posted by Budnews · Jan 19, 2017

The New York Times says: Budapest is a majestic European capital that revels in modernity.

Here comes another list we’re on: The New York Times made its 52 Places to Go in 2017 list, as they say: some ideas to get started. It really would be nice to visit 52 places in 52 weeks, and as we scrolled down during daydreaming, we found Budapest on the list! Our capital is the 50th, and they recommend it, because:

„Post-Iron Curtain Budapest has emerged as an animated metropolis. An appealing, youthful energy increasingly arises in the city, at new restaurants like Szimply and Margá Bisztro. Visitors can peruse Hungarian-made jewelry and quirky housewares at Velvet Chemistry and Szimpla Design Shop. A slate of new accommodations, including the locally designed Hotel Rum, further signals the city’s stylish ascent.”

Well, it’s flattering, but doesn’t say too much about the city. Let us fill this gap. While you’re here, try the following things (and study our archive articles for more ideas):

Discover the historic city center: take a walking tour on the Castle Hill to see the panoramic view, walk across Chain Bridge, the first bridge to connect Buda and Pest, visit the Parliament Building, not just because its amazing architecture but because of the Hungarian Crown Jewels, take a stroll on Andrássy Avenue to Heroes' Square and to understand why Budapest is often called the Paris of the East. One tip: there are quite a lot of cobblestones in the historic city center, so forget the stiletto heels.

Food lovers should visit the Central Market Hall and grab some traditional Hungarian food, or try an authentic Hungarian dish with vintage Hungarian wine in a small bistro. Or: take a Hungarian cooking course and impress your friends at home! While being here, don’t miss a performance at the world famous Budapest Opera House, or at the Palace of Arts, learn about great Hungarian masters and their works at the Hungarian National Gallery, visit the Museum of Fine Arts and enjoy a day amongst famous European art or take a dip and relax in one of Budapest's famous baths. This latter is particularly recommended in this cold weather.

So yes: we are appealing and youthful and something you must see once in a lifetime!
