Wagner in Budapest Opera Festival
Posted by Ágnes Taraszovics · Jun 5, 2014

The Wagner in Budapest Festival will be held ninth time in the Palace of Arts between 12-22 June. The organizers continue the tradition to expand the repertoire with a new premiere in every year.

The creators sorted from the best pieces of Wagner. The program of the Budapest Wagner days consists of the four music dramas of The ring of the Nibelung and the version of Tannhäuser presented in 2012. The purpose of the productions in Budapest is to bring to life Richard Wagner's works with high-quality implementation of tools inherent in the music. All this is accompanied by visual effects that will not conceal, but also help the music’s self-expression. The soloists will be star singers again, who can be relied upon to hold their own in Richard Wagner’s operas, with all the unusual demands they place on vocal and performance technique.

What is the short story of these operas? The subject of The Ring of Nibelung is the fate of the world, the historical journey of human existence and non-existence and a monumental, romantic and anti-romantic creation-destruction story. In the tetralogy we will see stars such as Oskar Hillebrandt, Egils Silins, Zoltán Nyári, Christian Franz and Walter Fink, Jay Hunter Morris, Gerhard Siegel, and Iréne Theorin. The artistic director and conductor of the pieces (and of Tannhäuser too) is Ádám Fischer, the world renowned Hungarian conductor.

In addition to the full-cycle of Wagner's Ring of the Nibelung, his most romantic musical drama, the Tannhäuser also can be heard this year. This opera will be played two times, also with the co-operation of world-renowned soloists. The main conflict of the opera is the eternal dilemma of the heart: the opposite of the pure Christian love and the guilty sensuality. The opera will be presented in the direction of Matthias Oldag, the renowned German director, who received massive press coverage in 2012 for the same performance. Stephen Gould, the singer of the title role is one of today's most sought-after tenor heroes and the actress in leading role will be the excellent Russian mezzo-soprano, Julia Gertseva.

The festival acclaimed “The Danube shore Bayreuth” has continuously growing importance and interest. Last year, the Reuters news agency and the French Anaclase opera magazine reported about the event brought to life by Ádám Fischer. The New York Times characterized the Mastersingers of Nuremberg as "heart-warming performance" after the 2013 debut in Budapest. Thus, we can heartily recommend the performances of the Wagner in Budapest Opera Festival to all who would like to hear and see Wagner’s works in their stunning purity.
