Bread and Pastry Festival in Budapest
Posted by Mia Balogh · Apr 17, 2014

Bread, pastry, finest sweet and salted goods and traditional treats in Buda Castle, a festival for all these goods – don’t miss it.

Bread was – and in some regions of the country, still is – one of the most important parts of the Hungarian gastronomy. That’s why the event called Bread and Pastry Festival is popular since 2012, so this year, it will be organized for the third time, on the 11th and the 12th of May.

The festival will be held at one of the most beautiful spots of the capital, Savoy Terrace of the Buda Castle. The best bakeries will offer their products there, some of them fresh from the oven.

The aim of the festival is to show the Hungarian people from the capital and the tourists here the rich traditions of the Hungarian bread- and pastry making and the selected delicacies of bakeries from different parts of the country.

If you arrive to Budapest for a few days and you would like to see and ‘taste’ not only the city, but Hungary, as well, don’t miss the Festival. There, you can taste sleazy loaf, bread and pastry made with rye or potato, with or without yeast.

Besides the different bread types, popular pastries appear, as well. For example, you can taste the cocoa shell, which is a favourite of children in the kindergarten and for working men, as well. If you are there, don’t miss the traditional tart and the variants for salty cakes.

Besides the delicious and traditional treats, you can also enjoy folklore and artistic productions, theatrical productions from the students of the study hall theatre in Kertész Street, pop music from Zoltán Bereczki, and other shows and games.

Folk music and folkdance productions will follow each other on the stage so you can see and listen to Hungarian folk music and maybe try Hungarian folk dance with other visitors of the festival.

If you don’t feel like dancing, you can try folk games by the instructions of a play master. You can play for example ‘throwing hoops’, aimed throwing, or you can try the stilts – long legs maybe seen only on TV or in films for now.

In the festival, you can see how they make this little, traditional label for the bread and they will bake the Bread of Buda Castle – the Bread, which later can be tasted by the guests of this festival.

The entrance for the festival is free so if you are in Budapest this year in May, don’t miss it. Maybe you will think afterwards, that without bread, our daily meals are unimaginable.
