A place to love: the best greengrocery shop in the city

Lumen Vegetable and Community Provider is a place to love for many reasons.

Do you know the feeling, when you have a small grocery shop just around the corner, where you get everything you need for a perfect day? And I don’t mean only the amazingly fresh vegetables, fruits and grocery. You get a smile, a „how are you”, a little chit-chat about the rumors of the neighborhood and the certainty that you always get the best goods available. Even in the big cities people have a need for these kinds of relationships, because I think this is what makes the neighborhood feel like home.

Luckily, Lumen is located right in the city center, so you can reach it easily if you prefer this homey atmosphere of shopping over the crowded, impersonal and who knows what exactly you’re buying kind of shopping in supermarkets.

Lumen Vegetable & Community Provider is a multifunctional space: it is both a greengrocery and a gastro-cultural platform. The mission of Lumen Vegetable is to provide a special culinary experience to its customers each day, so it not only offers fresh, quality fruits and vegetables but also carries an assortment of goods made by Hungarian farmers. Besides these nourishing products with no preservatives, the small family-run business also stocks less common ingredients used in international cuisine.

The greengrocery is nothing new for long-time residents of the neighborhood, as the Lumen team has merely reintroduced a popular former business that had operated for several decades at this location. The store at 14. Klauzál tér (entrance from Csányi utca) had since 1956 been run by the Gottfried family. Today, the store is run by the Uliczki family, which also has a multi-generational history in the greengrocery business. Two families, three generations of greengrocers, and Lumen united to bring back this business, but now with an added communal function. After opening hours the Communal Space is available for use as a venue for events organized for/by people interested in gastronomy or contemporary culture. The interior is reconfigurable in many ways so that each setup best fits the specific need: workshops, presentations, talks, screenings can all happen.
