Plastic bags can be banned in Hungary from 2021
Posted by Mia Balogh · Sep 27, 2018

Disposable plastic bags’ prices will be raised next year, and a total ban can follow the decision from 1 January 2021.

We all know that plastic products are not quite environmentally friendly – these disposable products like plastic bags, cups, knives, forks and straws mean a global environmental problem (and also make the seas and oceans even more plastic-polluted).

That’s why the European Union is already planning to ban these products. In Hungary, the innovation and technology ministry plans at first to raise product fees for disposable plastic bags - and also plastic cups, knives, forks and straws - from next year, and aims to introduce a ban on the bags from 2021, the ministry told MTI on Sunday.

On average, Hungarians use more than 80 plastic bags a year, many of which end up in landfills, the ministry noted.

A draft of the new rules is expected to be released for public consultation at the end of September.
