3 best Hungarian holiday destination for the winter season
Posted by Ágnes Taraszovics · Jan 15, 2016

After our last article, where we listed the best spas in Budapest, we went further now. Here come the best wellness and thermal opportunities of Hungary. If you miss the heat and the carefree splashing, they are must-sees!

In this cold winter weather we only desire hot water pools, comfortable rooms and relaxing. And these are exactly the common things between these hotels and resort towns. We collected the best places in Hungary where you can bathe and relax in summer mood even now, in January. The mentioned hotels are our personal favorites, but all three of the resort town itself is well worth a visit.

Hajdúszoboszló - Hunguest Hotel Aqua-Sol

Hajdúszoboszló is the most classical holiday city if you want an aqueous holiday. The city is known as the "Mecca for rheumatism" because since they found the thermal water in 1972, hundred thousands of people enjoyed the hot and curative water. The thermal water exerts a very positive influence in case of many diseases: chronic joint inflammation, neuralgia, neuritis, slowly healing bone fractures and chronic gynecological diseases are only a few names on the list.

The city’s biggest attraction, Hungarospa thermal bath is one of the largest resorts in Europe, which includes beach, swimming pool department, Aqua Park and Adventure Park. The only hotel in Hajdúszoboszló whose guests can use the thermal complex all year round without changing ticket is the Hunguest Hotel Aqua-Sol, so we recommend this one to try. All the more so, because guests of the hotel can reach the Aqua Palace (the indoor part of the thermal complex that operates all year round) directly, via a covered passage. This indoor bathing department offers countless opportunities with its spa pools, themed fun pools, surf education and everything that you can imagine. But our favorite is still the hot outdoor pool, into which there is a covered passage to get out. It’s an unforgettable experience to sit in the steaming water while snow falls.

Hévíz - Hotel Spa Hévíz

Hévíz is worth a visit because a unique, natural thermal lake with peat bed is located here. Héviz thermal lake is Europe's largest warm-water curative lake with its 4.44 hectares and the surrounding 50 hectares of protective forests. The temperature of the thermal lake is the result of the mixture of cold and hot spring water. In summer, the water temperature is 33-35 °C, but on very hot days it can reach 36-38 °Celsius. In autumn and winter the temperature is lower, about 24-26 °C, but it’s still cozy in comparison with the air. This water temperature has calming, relaxing effect on the bathers and patients, because this value is inert in the human heat balance. The 1.5-2 meters wide steam layer above the lake prevents water (and people) from cooling down.

If you’d try out Europe's largest lake, we recommend the Hotel Spa Hévíz for accommodation, because this is the only hotel in Héviz, which is located right next to the world famous and unique thermal lake. In addition, they provide free entrance ticket every day to the lake.

Budapest - Danubius Health Spa Resort Margitsziget

To not let the opportunities offered by the capital without a word, on the third place of our list there is Danubius Health Spa Resort Margitsziget. While we would recommend the previous two rural opportunities for 4-5 days long weekend, Margaret Island is perfect for one night stands. Don’t get me wrong, I could happily spend an entire week here just enjoying the cozy rooms, but if you have time only for a one-day pampering, you don’t have to travel a lot. Of course there are medical and spa pools, and everything we would expect, but there are also some pretty cool extras: Emporium Wellness & Beauty, cosmetic surgery (!), Therapy and Wellness Centre, Kneipp therapy, salt room, cardio center, eye and dental clinic and a Fitness Club.

Actually, I quitetake fancy to have a cozy weekend, don’t you?
