Budapest among most the world’s most walkable cities

Our capital is not only one of the most wonderful places in the world but also happens to be on the list of the most walkable cities, preceding for example Barcelona and Berlin.

Online travel website Tourlane.com published a list recently, for the 29th annual World Walking Day – their compilation is like a special guide to the top 50 most walkable cities in the world, and it includes Budapest, too.

How did they make this ranking? They ‘mapped the walking distance between the top five attractions in hundreds of destinations around the world, and created a final shortlist of 50 cities where the total does not exceed 10 miles. Forget crowded subways, enclosed spaces, and expensive taxis—don your walking shoes and take to the spacious streets of the world’s most exciting cities’ – they write.

According to the website, two Italian cities are the most walkable ones in the world: Florence is the first, Venice is the second. These amazing cities are followed by Riga, Athens, Hamburg, Edinburgh, Madrid, Porto, Tallinn and Stockholm.

Budapest shares the 24th place with Vancouver and Bristol, and Tourlane.com highlights the City Park, Heroes Square, Hungarian Parliament Building, Fisherman’s Bastion and Buda Castle as top 5 attractions of our capital.

They also add that walking is the best way to discover a new destination. ‘It’s free, easy, and healthy, helping you to find out what makes a city unique. Walking also benefits the environment—as fewer vehicles means fewer emissions. As many cities have top attractions clustered near each other, walking is often faster than other modes of transport to explore top highlights’ – they write.
