New trams in Budapest
Posted by Mia Balogh · Nov 6, 2014

47 new vehicles will arrive to Budapest in 2015, as part of the Urbos “tram fleet”, ordered from Spain, to replace old vehicles on the lines of tram 1, 3, 19 and 61. We can already show you how these new trams will look like.

Wherever you go in Budapest, you can find a special balance between old and new in the city. It is the same in the public transport, too, because in addition to the old vehicles and transport lines, there are some new lines, like metro 4, and there are some renovated ones or lines under renovation, like the line of tram 1 ad 3. There are also new vehicles on the line of metro 2, and you can see or try some new trolleys, as well.

Soon, there will be some more new vehicles in the city: next year, 47 new trams will run on the tramway lines 1, 3, 19 and 61. BKK, Centre for Budapest Transport has posted some photos to their Facebook page on 30 October, presenting the new trams, ordered from CAF, Zaragoza, Spain. The polishing of the first trams from the “fleet” has begun in the CAF factory, and the rest will be finished soon – some of them in Hungary, in the vehicle repair plant of Dunakeszi.

The new trams will look almost like the pink one on the cover photo, but maybe their colours will be changed a little bit, which would be more fitting into Budapest’s fleet of yellow and blue vehicles on the streets. Regarding the interior, the trams are said to be designed with low floor, so the transport of disabled people or families with babies and baby buggies will be easier and more comfortable.

Furthermore, passengers won’t have to sustain seats on the footrest platforms anymore, because all the seats are designed to the floor, so no more uncomfortable seats. All the trams will be air conditioned, heated in the winter, and there will be security cameras on every tram. Their information system for passengers will be integrated to FUTÁR, which is an online journey planner application, developed for smart phones and tablets, useful for everyone who wants to plan a trip in Budapest.

There will be two types of the new trams: the shorter ones will be able to transport 200 people, with 46 seats, meanwhile regarding the longer ones, the numbers are almost doubled: these vehicles will be able to transport 345 passengers, and will have 81 seats. So if you come to Budapest at the end of 2015, you can hopefully see and try these new tramways in the city.
