Fitness, fun and sightseeing – join Tour de Budapest
Posted by Mia Balogh · Apr 1, 2015

Are passionate about health, fitness and fun? Would you like to see Budapest as you never did before? Then join Tour de Budapest, organized by CrossFit Duna, and enjoy an exceptional way of sightseeing and working out.

We heard about Tour de Budapest and wanted to know more, so we contacted Soeren Salomo – one of the two owners of Reebok CrossFit Duna – who is one of the organizers and founders of Tour de Budapest, as well, with business partner and “partner in crime” Klaus Jespersen. They are a CrossFit affiliate located on Hajógyári Sziget, opened in 2012, and have an extremely diverse and multinational membership base. Soeren answered all our questions about the upcoming event on May 9, read the full interview with him here.

How did the idea of Tour de Budapest come to your mind?

Klaus and I talked back in 2014 about something that we thought was missing in terms of a CrossFit experience in Budapest. Klaus mentioned that we should organize a sightseeing tour but in CrossFit fashion i.e. in a race format and including short but intense CrossFit workouts. He had that idea for a while, and it then resurfaced in May 2014. We wanted to organize it as fast as possible because we knew that many of our close friends from Reebok CrossFit Duna would leave Budapest for the summer and so we decided to host the first edition on June 6, 2014. We had 25 people participating in 6 teams then. The feedback we received afterwards was overwhelming, and many people ushered us on that we should host a second edition, because they would like to do it again and know many more that would join. So we started thinking, why not, and scheduled the next Tour de Budapest for September 19, 2014. Shortly, after the announcement we were all out of tickets. After having had 6 teams for the first edition we decided to host 18 teams now, but because of the incredible demand we bumped it up to 24, so that we had 96 people participating in second tour. Now for the third edition we expect 30 teams and a total of 120 participants on May 9, 2015.

When people make the Tour, what is more important: sightseeing or the workout they do during the time of the sightseeing?

This is really different for each team. We put a very high emphasize on the fun part, and encourage people to look around every now and then, and really enjoy the beauty of our city. Many come from different cities in Hungary, and some even from abroad. So far we had teams from Slovakia and Romania participating that came all the way to Budapest just to be part of the Tour de Budapest, which is amazing. Of course, many of our teams also like the competition part of it, and therefore we strive to ensure that every team has access to the same conditions and that it is fair. But in the end we want everyone to go home with a smile, and tell their friends and family what a great time they had in Budapest, and how beautiful the city really is.

What information do you give the participants before the competition?

Prior to the Tour, the participants know the workouts and the starting point of the Tour, but the rest remains undisclosed. The Tour takes approximately 2 hours, and the workouts consist of mostly bodyweight movements. No fitness level is required but it is vital for the teams to work as a unit and support each other. Teams are equipped with one timer per team, and only when all members finished, the final time will be taken. When and where will the Tour be organized in 2015, and how can we join?

The next Tour de Budapest will take place on May 9, 2015 and start at 12 am. The team tickets can be bought via our online shop:

https://clients.mindbodyonline.com/classic/home?studioid=34761

A team ticket costs 120 EUR (approx. 36.000 HUF) and is valid for a team of 4 people. There is no fixed team composition. It can be a team of 4 men, 4 women or any mix. All teams will receive a goodie bag equipped with little gifts from our sponsors – Hooters Budapest, Wodcrusher, King Coconut Water and Physiotrade. Additionally, the Juice Shop will provide a freshly prepared juice for all participants at the finish line – a juice so fresh that it will rejuvenate them immediately. In the evening we will host the Award Ceremony at Hooters Budapest that designed a customized Paleo menu just for the Tour.

Is the Tour's language Hungarian or can English speaking participants join, too?

For the Tour the main communication is done in English as many, including me, seem to struggle with learning ‘Magyar’ but we are getting there. The important details are always both in English and Hungarian. We actually expect for this edition teams from Slovakia, Romania and Austria.

What can the champion win at the Tour? What are the prizes?

This has to remain a secret at this moment. And we shouldn’t forget that the winning team gets to say that they won the Tour de Budapest… and is worth more than any price. More information:
