Ready, steady, run!

You can begin or continue running in Budapest – the Hungarian capital city offers a lot of running tracks and parks to do so. Our colleague, Mia resumed her favourite running routes to make your choice easier.

When I started running, a lot of people told me that it’s a great sport – good for the health and helps lose weight, furthermore, you don’t even have to buy a lot of stuff to begin. Well, I have to tell you that I have geared up at my favourite sport brands, but it was absolutely worth it: running became a habit, then a great love for me. Today, I can proudly say that I have explored Budapest as a runner, too so I can list my favourite places to run. Hopefully it helps you find the most suitable running route for you. ;)

1. Margaret Island (Margitsziget)

The running track at Margaret Island is the most popular place for a run in Budapest. A lot of people know it – tourists and locals – and it was already mentioned among the best running routes of the world by the blogger of Irish Times in 2012. Well, I agree, it’s quite good: you can run 5.3 kilometres on wide, smooth path near the Danube. But if you are a beginner or you just don’t like running on crowded tracks, then I suggest you to try something else.

2. City Park (Városliget)

I run in City Park and I love it: trees, birds, dogs, flowers, fresh air, Vajdahunyad Castle and fresh lemonade at Pántlika… it’s just amazing! You should try it, too – run 3 km by following the track or choose your own paths. That’s what I usually do because it makes every running a different and exciting experience.

3. Népliget

One of my friends used to run in the park at Népliget and she liked it very much. It is not crowded at all, maybe because it can be found at one of the least beautiful areas in Budapest, but if you are already there I suggest you to give it a try. The park is nice and you can choose between two running tracks (or you can do both). 3.6 kilometres can be done slowly or a little bit faster – as you wish.

4. Kopaszi dam and Orczy park

For beginners, I have two more options: Kopaszi dam and Orczy park can be nice choices for you. By choosing the first one, you can run 3 km at a really nice track while at the second one, you can do 1000 metres or the 400 metres-long running track (the quality is a bit modest, but good enough to enjoy your activity) next to the football field.

5. Normafa-Erzsébet Lookout Tower

If you are looking for a challenge, I mean really, then I suggest you to try one of the several running trails at Normafa, for example the one connecting Normafa and Erzsébet Lookout Tower. The distance is 5 km but you will feel that it might be more thanks to the thigh- and butt forming climbs. But after arriving to your destination, you will only feel the glorious satisfaction that you made it. ;)
