These are the best films of the 21st century. Three Hungarian movies are among them!

Béla Tarr’s two, Nemes-Jeles’ one and only film among the best.

It’s always incredible pride to read and write such news: Hungarian films made it to the „100 greatest films of the 21st Century” list. The list was created by BBC, who cannot wait the end of this century. They decided about the 21st century in 2016. For this huge project, they asked 177 critics from 36 countries all over the world to vote. The result, a.k.a the top list is a bit mixed and subjective: both Chihiro, Mulholland drive and No Country for Old Men are in the forefront. Disney animations, European art films and sick Asian movies follow one another in a hectic sequence. At least we can’t accuse the creators of partiality toward one genre.

The best ten films of the century are:

  1. Mulholland Drive (David Lynch, 2001)
  2. In the Mood for Love (Wong Kar-wai, 2000)
  3. There Will Be Blood (Paul Thomas Anderson, 2007)
  4. Spirited Away (Hayao Miyazaki, 2001)
  5. Boyhood (Richard Linklater, 2014)
  6. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (Michel Gondry, 2004)
  7. The Tree of Life (Terrence Malick, 2011)
  8. Yi Yi: A One and a Two (Edward Yang, 2000)
  9. A Separation (Asghar Farhadi, 2011)
  10. No Country for Old Men (Joel and Ethan Coen, 2007)

But where are the Hungarians here?

The Son of Saul, László Nemes’ Oscar-winner film is the 34th; Werckmeister Harmonies and The Turin Horse by Béla Tarr are 56th and 63rd on the BBC list. And given that 84 years are back from the century, and the Hungarian film industry has an upturn nowadays, we hope this number will increase by the end of the century.
