Skanzen – the perfect place to celebrate Easter
Posted by Budnews · Apr 12, 2017

If you spend Easter in Budapest, you have to visit Open Air Ethnographic Museum at Szentendre. They have the best Easter programs you can imagine.

Easter is traditionally the biggest Christian holiday, but now it is more about the painted eggs, chocolate bunnies and petting zoo. From this year, Easter is a 4-day long holiday in Hungary so we recommend to spend one day at Skanzen, the huge Open Air Ethnographic Museum at Szentendre, which awaits with exciting and authentic Easter programs. You can get acquainted with the traditions of the different Hungarian regions, how they paint the eggs, try sprinkling, a Hungarian tradition and of course, they also have a petting zoo with adorable bunnies.

It also worth visiting, because Skanzen at Szentendre demonstrates folk life in the most complex way: presents interior furnishings, collection of objects, farming equipment and spiritual relics of Hungarian language area from the 2nd half of the 18th century to the 1st half of the 20th century, through original and authentic objects, in relocated houses arranged in old settlement patters. The more and more elaborate settlement plan appropriates the relocation of more than 400 edifices into the museum, arranged into village-like regional units on the basis of ethnographical considerations. Within the units buildings are fitted into the traditional system of peasant households, supplemented by sacred, communal and outbuildings which used to be integral parts of traditional villages. Dwellings and farm-buildings represent the typical houses and outbuildings having evolved historically in each region.
